A tuxedo urchin (like Mespilia globulus) is a small, round sea creature covered in short, colorful spines.
Its spines are usually blue, black, or red, arranged in neat patterns that make it look like it’s wearing a tiny tuxedo.
It also likes to pick up shells or bits of rock and carry them on its back for protection.
Tuxedo urchins live on coral reefs and eat algae, which helps keep the reef clean.
Tuxedo Urchin
Tank Setup
Minimum tank size: about 20–30 gallons
Provide live rock for grazing and hiding
Make sure rocks are stable - urchins can knock things over
Water Conditions
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
pH: 8.1–8.4
Keep water clean and stable (they are sensitive to sudden changes)
Feeding
Main diet: algae (they are great natural cleaners)
Excellent at eating hair algae, especially when it is short (under about 1 inch)
If algae is low, supplement with:
Dried seaweed (nori)
Algae wafers
Behavior
Will carry small objects (shells, coral frags, rubble) on its back
Moves slowly and is often more active at night
May rearrange loose items in your tankCompatibility & Safety Tips
Generally, reef safe, but may move coral frags
Avoid housing with animals that may pick at it (some fish or crabs)
Spine warning: Their spines are sharp and can easily puncture skin, causing pain and irritation. Avoid handling them directly—use gloves or a container if you need to move one.
Always drip acclimate slowly when adding to your tank
