The Green Tongue Plate Coral, commonly known as Herpolitha limax, is a unique free-living large-polyp stony (LPS) coral. Unlike round plate corals, this species grows in an elongated, “tongue-like” shape, often with a central mouth that can stretch along the body.
Its surface is covered in short tentacles that give it a slightly fuzzy look when extended. Coloration is typically shades of green, sometimes with hints of brown, cream, or even subtle fluorescent tones under reef lighting.

Lighting
- Moderate lighting
- Can adapt to slightly lower or higher light if acclimated
- Too much light may cause bleaching or tissue recession
Water Flow
- Low to moderate flow
- Gentle movement is ideal—strong flow can damage tissue or prevent expansion
Placement
- Best kept on the sand bed
- Do not place directly on rock—sharp edges can injure the soft underside
- Needs open space to expand fully
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 76–80°F
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Stable conditions are very important
Feeding
- Photosynthetic but benefits from target feeding
- Will accept:
- Mysis shrimp
- Chopped seafood
- Pellet or frozen coral foods
- Feed 1–2 times per week for better growth and health
Behavior & Compatibility
- Semi-aggressive
- Can extend sweeper tentacles, especially at night
- Keep several inches of space from other corals
- May inflate and shift position slightly on the sand
Growth & Propagation
- Slow to moderate growth
- In ideal conditions, may form additional mouths or expand significantly
Important Notes
- Delicate underside: Avoid rough handling or sharp substrate
- Inflation cycles are normal, but constant deflation can signal stress
- Sensitive to injury—even small tears can lead to infection
- Avoid placing near aggressive tank mates
